NORD Architects designed Furuset Hageby, a new Alzheimer’s and dementia Village in Oslo, Norway in collaboration with 3RW. The project meets an entire range of needs for people with reduced cognitive abilities and a Future Built project. Future Built is a program that has been going for 10 years with a vision of developing carbon neutral urban areas and high-quality architecture. The aim is to complete pilot projects like Furuset Hageby to inspire other building projects.
The project won 1st prize in the competition with jury stating “It is a ground-breaking project that answers the future demands within age and healthcare.”
The village concept integrated in a sloping landscape creates a small community with a range of spatial and landscape qualities. The village itself also integrates nature through out the premises with a green loop and three gardens, each with different themes and plants.
The intention is to let people carry on with their usual and daily activities to create a continuity in life and avoid the experience of being in an institution. The village should act like a safe and caring community where the people with dementia feel at home and safe in recognizable environment that is healthy, natural and local.
